It’s always pumpkin season.

Even though it’s still in the 90s down here in the south, I’m still more than ready for pumpkin everything. I might not be able to enjoy a bowlful of hot ‘n creamy pumpkin flax cereal for breakfast or a pumpkin brownie (or two or three) for dessert, but I’m not letting the heat hold me back! Pumpkin everything is making its way to my kitchen anyway with this Healthy Pumpkin Eggnog Smoothie!

Now, y’all know how much I love dessert, no matter what the temperature is, but smoothies are usually more of a breakfast staple in my house. Every now and again, though, my hubby or daughter will ask for a smoothie for a treat, and I’m more than happy to oblige. How can I say no when they ask for something as easy and nourishing as a smoothie?

When smoothies become a treat, I usually try and make them a little more exciting than a simple banana or strawberry smoothie (even though those are amazingly delicious!). And eggnog is certainly more exciting, in my opinion! A few years ago I came up with a healthy eggnog smoothie to satisfy my need for eggnog, even though it was still stifling outside. This year I decided to revisit it and put a pumpkin-y twist on one of my favorite drinks.

Healthy eggnog ingredients.

I kept the main ingredients that make the smoothie eggnog but added in some spice and some pumpkin to kick it up a notch and make it extra-special. Milk is the base of the smoothie, which is pretty standard when it comes to eggnog. Even though any kind of milk will do, I recommend using raw milk, or homemade coconut. I’m sure almond milk would be tasty, too, though I’ve not tried it.

Another key ingredient in eggnog is, of course, egg yolks. Since this smoothie isn’t cooked like traditional eggnog, the yolks will be consumed raw. Yep, you read that right. Raw. I used to shy away from eating raw eggs, due to allergies and general misinformation, but ever since my family’s stint with the GAPS diet, I’ve realized that eating the raw yolks from fresh, pastured, preferably free-range chickens is one of the best ways to get a healthy dose of B6, folate, B12, A, D, E, and K into your diet! The yolks also contain 90 percent of the egg’s calcium and iron! I don’t recommend eating raw yolks from the regular eggs you’d buy at Walmart, but if you can get your hands on healthy, organic eggs they definitely add a delicious creaminess to this smoothie.

This Healthy Pumpkin Eggnog Smoothie a simple, yet nutritious drink that will be a real-food holiday pleaser for sure.Gelatin is probably one of my favorite ingredients here, friends. Did you know that gelatin is considered to be a superfood? And I don’t really mean that boxed stuff you used to make Jello in your pre-real-food days. Gelatin from grass-fed animals is full of amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, glutamic acid, alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, lysine, to be precise) and it helps to heal the gut lining for those suffering from leaky gut.

And as for the addition of pumpkin as the final touch, it’s an antioxidant storehouse full of vitamin A, C, and E, as well as the B-complex vitamins folates, niacin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), thiamin and pantothenic acid. Pumpkin is also good source of minerals like copper, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus.

All of these key ingredients, plus the additions of cloves, blend together to make this Healthy Pumpkin Eggnog Smoothie a simple, yet nutritious drink that will be a real-food holiday pleaser for sure.
