“Health is a choice.”
That is a quote from a fictional TV show I was watching a couple weeks back and the quote has stuck with me ever since. I am reminded of it almost daily and it really has had a profound effect on me!
Health is a choice. Especially in today’s convoluted world of food and misinformation. The very people who we should be able to trust for sound health advice is our doctors. Yet, these are the same people who are telling us all the wrong things when it comes to nutrition. Eating less saturated fat does not lower your cholesterol. Eating red meat, butter, cheese, and milk is not going to increase your chances of a heart attack. Everywhere we turn, we see ads on TV, in magazines, on the Internet, all telling us what we should and should not eat.
The more research I do, the more that I am starting to believe that your activity level is almost more important than what you eat. Now, I’m not saying that you should eat whatever you want, whenever you want, just as long as you run 5 miles a day. But, I am saying that the two really go hand-in-hand. Your food should be the fuel that your body uses to stay active. If you want to help lower your chances of a heart attack, then don’t give up butter. Give up anything that is not considered real food and start moving. Exercise is the best thing you can do to regulate your body and keep it functioning at its optimal level. Food is simply the fuel to help it do that!
I guess in one sense, you could view my blog as my personal advertisement on what I think is healthy and nutritious. However, I really hope that my posts don’t come across like that and if they do, PLEASE send me an email and tell me so!! Or, post a comment on here for the world to see!
The goal of this blog is to give me an outlet for my obsession with research, real food, nutrition, and food news and share that information with others. I tend to talk the ears off of my family and friends, so since they can’t hear me anymore (no ears, get it? ha ha), I needed a new audience with ears intact!
So, I felt that a simple quote, “health is a choice”, was worthy of a post. I have really taken it to heart. Every single day, I make a choice to eat as much real food as I can and avoid processed, sugary, chemical-laden food. However, I struggle almost every day with some sort of roadblock, whether it be not enough time to fix something healthy, a craving that pops up unexpectedly, an ad that almost gets me to give in, etc. And, I know I’m not alone! I know others struggle with the same thing. We live in a world of convenience and sometimes it’s hard not to give in to it.
But, the thing that always pulls me back to reality is simply asking the questions “is this good for me?” If it’s a slice of pizza from Dominoes, then no. If it’s a slice of homemade pizza with fresh tomato sauce, raw milk cheese, and a homemade crust, then yes.
I want to hear from you. What choices do you make for health? How do you ensure that you are eating the best quality real food that you can, as well as exercising, all the while keeping your sanity and maintaining a hectic schedule? Please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas. I know that we could all learn a lot from one another!
