Berry Patch Farms - Brighton, CO

Berry Patch Farms – Brighton, CO

This weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Berry Patch Farms, with a couple friends. They had been out there recently to pick raspberries and currants and it sounded like so much fun that I just had to go. So, I rose early and headed out to meet them at the farm before it got too hot (except it was already sweltering at 8:30am -so much for beating the heat!).

Berry Patch Farms is a certified organic farm run by Tim and Claudia Ferrell. They have been in the farming business since 1991, but it wasn’t until 1994 that they started offering the “pick-your-own” services. It is a working farm and is 40 acres in size. There are no fees or memberships required – you just go out, pick what you want, and then pay before you leave. Everything is charged by the pound or by the container.

Besides the pick-your-own sections of raspberries, strawberries, currants, herbs, flowers, cucumbers, and more, they also have a large farm market where you can purchase a HUGE variety of other fruits and vegetables grown on their property. Just to get an idea of what all they grow on their 40 acres, check out their seasonal availability chart. They have a huge variety of melons, peppers, tomatoes, squash, potatoes, beans, onions, and other veggies, all fresh from the fields. The prices are very reasonable – maybe slightly higher than your local farmers market, but keep in mind this is a certified organic farm. Besides being organic, it’s pretty much the freshest produce you can get, considering the journey from the field to their market is so short! They also sell 100% grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and eggs, and fresh baked g0ods from a local bakery.

In addition to the produce, gorgeous flowers, and wide open spaces, they also have a host of critters who hang out and mingle with guests. These animals are their pets and are not grown for food. They have chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, dogs and cats all wandering around and doing what critters do best.

We were there for about 2 hours – it was starting to get really busy by the time we left, so I’m glad we got there early. Plus it was getting really hot. I can’t imagine being out in the field picking berries at 2pm. Whew! I left with a 10 pound flat of strawberries and raspberries, plus some other produce from their market including a few types of cucumbers, a few varieties of fresh basil, a sweet melon, some super sweet onions, and several types of sweet peppers. If you’re in the Denver/Boulder area, I highly recommend visiting this farm. It’s also a great learning opportunity for kids. Most kids nowadays have no idea what a farm is like, how to pick their own food, and how to interact with farm animals. This is a wonderful learning opportunity that puts us all back in touch with the land, something that we are quickly losing in today’s high-tech world.
