Morrocco Method Volcanic Power Dry Shampoo (a Dry Shampoo That Actually WORKS!) // deliciousobsessions.com

Dry shampoo.

The phrase seems like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? 🙂

I remember when dry shampoos first came on the market. I was super excited because I hate washing my hair. I love taking showers, as long as I don’t have to take the time to shampoo my hair.

I’m weird like that, I suppose.

So, when the dry shampoos started hitting the market many years ago, I jumped all over them. I was excited to have something that would make my life a little easier and let me skip more days of shampooing. At the time, I was working an office job so anything I could do to shave time off my early morning routine was quite appealing.

So, I stocked up on some different brands and got to using….Aaaaand, I was immediately disappointed.

My hair was left with a white mess of powder all over it and no matter how much I brushed or shook my hair, the white dust did not leave. Even if I just used a tiny bit of the powder, it just didn’t work right in my hair.

So what did I have to do each time I experimented? Hop in the shower (again) and shampoo. Or walk around looking like a bag of powdered sugar had exploded in my face.

I was not happy and decided then and there that dry shampoos were just not for me, and that was that.

Fast forward to 2016 and an email from one of my favorite companies, Morrocco Method. They contacted me back at the beginning of May and told me about a brand new product they were getting ready to launch.

Now, I am a huge fan of Morrocco Method and have written about them a couple times on my site (read my review of their products here, watch my video review of their products hereand read my popular henna post here). They have been one of my most trusted affiliate partners for a long time now and I love their products and use many of them daily in my own home. As you all know, I only promote brands and products on this site that I personally use and love. I have really high standards, so if I don’t love it, I won’t share it. It was an honor to work with them as a sponsor of this blog post and giveaway (details below!) and I really hope you enjoy!

When they emailed me about the new product, I was, of course, like “YES! I would love to test it out!“.

Oh, wait. It’s a dry shampoo????” [Cue flashbacks to my early morning white powder dance and subsequent showers.]

Hmmm, OK. Umm, well, I guess I’ll give it a try.

I was completely honest with them up front and told them about my past experiences with dry shampoo and that I was skeptical that this one would work for me. So, being the kind folks that they are, they also sent me a bottle of their Feng Shea Facial Scrub (which is a wonderful facial scrub), just in case the dry shampoo and I didn’t get along. 😉 I thought that was pretty awesome of them.

My Volcanic Powder Dry Shampoo Experience

So, the dry shampoo showed up soon thereafter, but it took me a few days to get the courage to test it out. I have always been lucky to not have super oily hair so I can get away with only washing my hair every 3-4 days. My hair is super fine though and it loses its volume and gets flat and lifeless after a few days, so a good washing and a blow dry helps boost that volume back up and makes me feel presentable.

Like I mentioned above, I really don’t like washing my hair. I’m not really sure why, but if I could, I’d go for weeks without washing. I think part of my dislike stems from the fact that I had a couple years of pretty severe hair loss (read this post for more about that) and so it’s created a deep-rooted fear of washing my hair because I don’t want to subsequently see my hands covered in hair.

Thankfully that severe hair loss has subsided, thanks to the new directions I went with my health, but that trauma from years ago still rises up now and then. It really was a sore spot for me for many years, and I know some of you can relate as you’ve had your own hair struggles.

But, I digress.

So, I waited until my hair was on its 3rd day when I would normally wash it before I tested out Morrocco Method’s Volcanic Powder Dry Shampoo. I’m not going to lie, I was apprehensive as I started sprinkling it on my hair and I only used a teeny, tiny bit. My hair does not get super oily, so the hairline from temple to temple and a little in my part was all I wanted to use it on.

I sprinkled it in and then rubbed it into the scalp and hair with my fingers. I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then used my boar bristle brush to brush any excess out.

And then I went to the mirror, fully expecting to see that my hair had turned white. But it hadn’t! And, with the good brushing and a little fluffing on the scalp, my hair was full of volume and looked pretty decent if I do say so myself.

With that one treatment of the dry shampoo, I was able to go another 2 days without washing. Each morning I just gave my hair a good brushing (upside down to get some volume) and then used a tiny bit of water to smooth out any weird cowlicks or weird patches that had gone rogue.

The areas that I had treated felt like they had more volume, so I decided the next time I needed to use it, I would do a little all over my scalp and see if I could add volume around the rest of my head. Like I mentioned above, my hair is super fine and gets flat and lifeless pretty quick, so the more volume the better in my opinion!

Well, this time I used WAY too much and did end up with a powdery residue all over my hair, neck, and shoulders. I brushed and brushed and shook my hair around and got most of the powder out, but I still had some noticeable powder as the day went on. Thankfully I was just at home cleaning and working so I didn’t bother hopping in the shower to shampoo.

Also, “pro” tip: Don’t wear a black shirt when brushing this out of your hair. Just sayin’.

After that over-zealous treatment, my hair did feel a lot thicker and more voluminous. But, it also felt more coarse and had a very, very slight residue feeling on it. I can’t really describe it, but it was weird. I definitely used way too much.

After that, it was just a matter of experimenting to find the perfect amount for my hair. I feel like I have finally found that by using way less than I think I need and then giving it at least 10 minutes to help soak up some of the oil on my hair.

Oh! And one thing I’ve noticed is that since I started using this product, my hair feels fuller and more voluminous, even after I’ve shampooed it out. I’m not sure if that’s my imagination or if it really has helped add some body, but I’ll take it!

One huge plus for this product is that it doesn’t use talc or baby powder, which is what a lot of brands do use. These powders not only leave your hair bright white, but they are also pretty harmful for your health (i.e. the recent Johnson & Johnson baby powder lawsuit). Instead, they use bentonite clay which has a great record of safety for cosmetic and health uses. The clay is a greyish color which I have found blends into my hair much better than the white baby powder shampoos.

All in all, I love this new product and will continue to use it. It’s going to be especially handy when traveling. And, if you are a camper, this would be excellent for camping trips. I wish I had this back in the day when my family was regularly camping during the summer!

My Top 5 Tips for Using Morrocco Method’s Volcanic Powder Dry Shampoo

Before you dive into the dry shampoo and end up with half the bottle on your head, here are a few tips that have made my life easier.

  1. Use WAY less than you think you need. You can always add more if needed, but it’s hard to take it away once it’s already on your head. It’s amazing how powerful just a tiny bit of the powder can be.
  2. Don’t wear black or dark colored clothing when applying to your hair, rubbing it in, or brushing it out. Trust me. Not pretty.
  3. Give it adequate time to soak up some of the oils before you start brushing your hair. I like to give at least 5 minutes, but 10 minutes seems to work even better.
  4. Don’t be afraid to really massage it into your scalp. One residual fear that is leftover from my severe hair loss days is the fear of touching or massaging my scalp because it would always mean a ton of hair coming out. But, scalp massage (just like massage anywhere else on the body) is actually really important to our scalp and hair health.
  5. Brush your hair really well. This helps disperse some of the powder all over your hair, which helps build up volume and body (for my hair at least). Don’t forget to brush your scalp too, as that helps with blood flow to the head.
