{Note from Jessica: Today’s post is shared by my sweet friend Renee, author of Raising Generation Nourished. We became friends several years ago and I am continually impressed with her desire to help change the world, starting with our newest generation. Real food has to be core of our health and should start in the womb. Considering this is the first time in history that our children are expected to die before us, something HAS to change. I’m honored to call her a friend. I hope you’ll stop by her site, Raising Generation Nourished, and say hello!}

So there’s this thing that happens when you have really little kids that have grown up on real food and they get to the age where they can read…

Last year my first born was in kindergarten and the questions started coming at me left and right:

“What’s a Fruit Loops, momma?”

“What kind of store is McDonald’s, momma?”

“Can we get that fun Dora box that says Mac N Cheese, momma?”

For the most part, I take it as a great opportunity to not only praise her amazing reading skills so young, but also to age appropriately educate about where food comes from and how it can either fuel us with stuff that will make us feel great, or fuel us with stuff that is going to make us feel lousy and tired. I absolutely read ingredient labels with her, and give her the answers she is looking for.

We have also taken those situations and turned them around asking questions like, “How could we make that using real ingredients?” We have perfected kid favorites with a real food spin like the Mac N Cheese, yummy dinners like real food sloppy joes and real homemade potato chips, and fun treats like mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Copycat Shamrock Shake :: Dairy Free & Loaded With Nutrient Dense Ingredients!

Right around St. Patrick’s Day last year, we were at a stoplight and she read the McDonald’s sign advertising their specials on the one and only Shamrock Shake and she was so curious what that might be.

It seemed simple enough (especially considering how many I used to order in my pre-real food days…I knew exactly how they tasted!), and I already had some tricks up my sleeve on how to load up a smoothie with nutrient dense ingredients. So we tackled a Shamrock Shake flavored smoothie in the kitchen that weekend, and came up with a creamy, rich, sweet mint shake that I could feel good about my little ones enjoying.
