One of the most popular posts on my site is my How to Make Basic Herbal Preparations: Infusions, Decoctions, and Tinctures.
Making your own herbal tinctures is SO easy and will save you a ton of moolah over buying them pre-made. In this video, I show you how easy it is. Part 2 (where I show you how to strain everything off) is coming soon!
Curious about how much money you really can save? Here is a single example that I did:
Homemade Holy Basil Tincture:
- Vodka (1.75 liters or roughly 59 ounces): $10.99 or $0.19 per ounce.
- Organic Dried Holy Basil from Mountain Rose Herbs (1 pound / 16 ounces): $13.00 or $0.81 per ounce
- Total per ounce cost for Homemade Holy Basil Tincture: $1.00
Store bought Holy Basil Tincture:
- Gaia Herbs Holy Basil Tincture from Vitacost.com (price as of 5/28/15): $10.82 for a one ounce bottle
That is a MASSIVE savings and one that should inspire you to take tinctures into your own hands! It’s simple, fun, and rewarding! 🙂

Can you use fresh herbs for tinctures? Or do the herbs need to be dried?
Hi Grace! I always used dried because that is what I have on hand. You can use fresh herbs to make tinctures, but the process is a little different. This article gives a great explanation of how to do it with fresh: https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/guide-tinctures-extracts
