I’ve passed up quite a few amazing sounding recipes in the past that called for coconut butter. Why? I didn’t want to pay for organic coconut butter because well, it’s a little steep. Some of the top brands I’ve looked at run around $10 for 16 oz.
So a few months ago I ordered a gallon of organic shredded coconut for about $17 with big plans to make coconut milk and finally make my own coconut butter. I was tired of passing up on these amazing recipes!
I don’t know what took me so long! Making your own coconut butter is simple. I mean like ridiculously simple. All you need is shredded coconut or coconut flakes and a blender.
I used 3 cups of shredded coconut and it yielded about 4-6 ounces. You can easily double the recipe for more.
I store my coconut butter in the cabinet. It will harden a little unless your kitchen is really hot. You may need to warm it up a little the next time you need to use it.

how about substituting the dried flakes to freshly grated coconuut? fresh coconut is cheaper here in the philippines.. thank you and more power to your site..
Hi Jaja – I’ve never made it with fresh, so I’m not sure how well that would work for this recipe. If you try it, let us know how it goes!
I used fresh but it never got real smooth…i blended for 4+ min….still usable
Hi Ali – Fresh coconut meat will not yield the same texture. For this recipe you need dried.
Fantastic recipe…and super easy! Thank you so much. I used to buy organic coconut butter all the time and this wonderful recipe is 1/5 the price!!
So glad you liked it! You can save a ton of money! 🙂
Sounds intriguing! What is the shelf life of homemade coconut butter, please? Thank you.
Hi Angela – It should keep for 9-12 months in a cool, dark place (like a cupboard or pantry) with no problems.
That is so awesome! This will save some money. Thanks!
Hi Lorie! So glad it was helpful! Yes, it should save quite a bit, especially if you get a good deal on the dried coconut. Enjoy! 🙂
