There’s nothing more lovely than coming in from the cold to the heavenly aroma of something baking in the oven. Pies, cakes, cookies…yum.

For me, cinnamon is one of my very favorite spices. I love anything with cinnamon, and absolutely LOVE the smell of cinnamon, but I can’t exactly be baking cinnamon desserts every day.

That would not be good. 🙂

So this Cinnamon and Spice Homemade Air Freshener recipe is the next best thing. And let me tell you, it is heavenly!

But before we get to the recipes, you may be wondering why I don’t just go to the store and buy a candle?? There are so many amazing scents for every season…. Or why not just buy an air freshener or air freshener spray from the store?

Before you light your next candle or spray that air freshener, there are a few things you should know:

According to a University of Michigan study:

Some candles on the market today are made with wicks that have either lead or lead cores that emit potentially dangerous levels of lead into the air.

Paraffin candles are a major offender releasing carcinogenic chemicals into the air when burned and can release as many toxins as cigarette smoke.

And like the article I wrote on the dangers of perfume, fragrances used in perfumes, candles, air fresheners, and household cleaners are highly unregulated. Studies have found many chemicals in the products that were not listed on the label.

So, I say no thank you and opt for a heavenly smell without the dangerous chemicals:

Cinnamon and Spice Essential Oil Blend

You can create a homemade air freshener in a few different ways, but they will all use this simple, but heavenly essential oil blend.

Ingredients:

  • 20 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil
  • 20 drops nutmeg essential oil
  • 10 drops ginger essential oil
  • 10 drops clove bud essential oil

Add all of your essential oils to a glass bottle to combine. I purchased my bottle from Mountain Rose Herbs for around $1.25. Place the lid on the bottle and gently move the bottle from side to side and upside down to blend the oils.

Yep, it smells pretty amazing!

Now you get to decide just how you want to make your homemade air freshener. I am sharing 4 different ways in this post, but feel free to be creative. You can’t go wrong with this essential oil blend.

Essential Oil Diffuser Instructions

One of the easiest ways to disperse your new cinnamon and spice essential oil blend would be in an essential oil diffuser if you have one.

Fill your diffuser with water and add 4-6 drops of your essential oil blend. Turn it on and let the magic begin.

Homemade Air Freshener Spray

For a lovely portable homemade air freshener, making an air freshener spray is a great option.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup distilled water
  • 1/2 cup alcohol, vodka or more water
  • 15-20 drops cinnamon and spice essential oil blend

Add all ingredients to a glass spray bottle and give it a little shake before spraying.

Homemade Car Air Freshener

There are a few ways to freshen your car with your new essential oil blend. If you are crafty (which I am not… wish I was) you could get some felt, create and cut out a cute design and hang it from your rearview mirror. You would simply add a few drops of your essential oil blend and voila, a cute way to freshen your car.

Another option is an essential oil pendant necklace hanging from your rearview mirror.

I love this option for a few reasons:

  1. You can find some really cute Terracotta Pendants on Etsy for under $5.
  2. It serves dual purposes, a necklace or homemade car air freshener.
  3. It is so simple. Place a few drops of your essential oil blend on your pendant and you are good to go!

Baking Soda Air Freshener

For those rooms in the house that need a little freshening up, aka the bathroom or teenage son’s room, this baking soda air freshener is a great option.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 20-25 drops cinnamon and spice essential oil blend
  • small glass mason jar or container (I found a great little glass jar for $1 at my local dollar store)

Add baking soda to your jar and stir in the essential oil blend. Place in your bathroom, bedroom or anywhere else that needs a little freshening up. Every once in awhile, give the jar a little shake.

As you can see, it is super easy to make a safe, natural homemade air freshener. If you’re not a fan of the cinnamon and spice blend, get creative and mix up your own air freshener blend of essential oils.
