Dental care is one of those necessary evils we all face. I mean, who really LIKES to go to the dentist?

Not me.

One of the best ways to make going to the dentist a bit better is to take care of your teeth and gums. With dental care, preventive care is the best route. And like just about everything else around today, it is difficult to find products that are actually good for your teeth and gums.

Commercial toothpastes are full of things that you really don’t want in your mouth. You can read more about what’s in your toothpaste, here. If you want to try your hand at homemade toothpaste, check out Jessica’s recipe.

One of my favorite ways to help keep my teeth and gums in good condition is to use essential oils.

Essential oils are often used to kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, and cleanse. I know essential oils are a bit of a hot topic right now and I’ll tell you, they are worth the time of researching and finding out if they are right for you.

When used properly essentials oils are not only effective but they are cost-efficient. When looking at essential oils, just like with everything else, look at the label. You want to make sure you are getting essential oils that are pure, ones that do not contain other chemicals or fragrances. There are a lot of great EO companies out there right now, just do your research to find one that is affordable to you.

A small bottle may seem pricey, but when you use them at proper dilution (and don’t let anyone tell you differently, you need to dilute your oils unless working on a specific, persistent issue) a small bottle goes a long way.

For me, I have a few ‘go-to’ oils for oral wellness in our house. I use them in my toothpaste, mouth wash and even will add a drop when I oil pull if I really feel like my gums need attention. Oil pulling is a great way to help keep your teeth clean without chemicals, you can read more about it, here.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint is a great oil to add to homemade dental products. Not only does it leave your mouth feeling refreshed and clean, but it will also help kill germs. Our mouths are known for hiding bacteria and peppermint essential oil will help reduce those germs. It also has astringent properties so it can help tighten up your gums if they are a bit swollen.

Clove Essential Oil

Clove essential oil is one I like to keep around for toothaches. It has an analgesic effect and can help reduce inflammation.

Myrrh Essential Oil

Myrrh has long been associated with oral wellness and helps promote healthy gums. It reduces inflammation and also cleanses the mouth. The oils are to be diluted and I don’t recommend them for internal use. I use them to swish and spit, whether while oil pulling or in mouth wash.  I know that sometimes making homemade products gets overwhelming but let me tell you, mouthwash is super easy and you’ll be so happy to be getting away from the chemicals all while helping your gums and teeth.

Making your own homemade mouthwash is easy and cost-effective. Just a few simple ingredients (easily found online or at your local health food store) and you'll be ready to go!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add all to a jar and shake well.
  2. Shake before each use.
I love this recipe because the witch hazel is an astringent, helping to tighten gums and the aloe helps soothe sore tissues in the mouth. The peppermint essential oil gives it a clean, fresh taste without fake chemicals.

Tell me, what are your favorite essentials oils for oral wellness? How do you like to use them?
