Earthing: Create Vibrant Health by Getting in Touch With the Earth! // deliciousobsessions.com

UPDATE 2015: Sadly, Juil decided to close their doors earlier this year. I was SO bummed when they emailed me to say they were closing. They did not disclose to the public why they closed, other than they needed to regroup and decide what direction (if any) to take the company. Hopefully they will come back at some point in the future. I sure do miss them and their super comfy shoes. 🙁

I am constantly getting asked what earthing shoes I recommend and I honestly have not tried any other brands. I did find this brand on Amazon for those who may want to explore new options.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you heard of earthing?
It is gaining popularity among health conscious folks and despite how people may think it’s a little “out there”, to me, it makes perfect sense.
Earthing, also called grounding, is the process of connecting to the Earth and absorbing energy from the Earth.
Have you ever walked around barefoot in the sand or grass and just felt better, more at ease, even healthier?
There is a legitimate reason for this. Studies have actually shown that maintaining a direct connection between our bodies and the Earth’s surface is beneficial to our health.
How Do We “Earth”?
We live in a toxic world.
No matter how hard we strive to live a natural life, toxins are all around us – in our air, in our water, in our environment.
While we can do our very best to reduce our exposure, it will be impossible to completely avoid toxins altogether. Well, perhaps unless you go and live in a hut in the middle of a dessert or other far off remote place. Not many of us are able, or willing, to do this.
Stress is a form of a toxin, because it has just as detrimental effect on our body and overall health as any chemical does (and perhaps more).
Exposure to all of this can lead to a build up of free radicals in our body, which can attack healthy cells and lead to inflammation. As you have heard me say time and time again, inflammation really is the root of all disease.
So, what’s a person to do?
The Earth is a giant magnet that produces an endless supply of electrons. These electrons can actually be absorbed into our body and help neutralize and clear the free radicals from our body. Over time, free radicals can build up in the body and in order for them to become stable, they have to “connect” to an electron.
Electrons are available in certain foods, vitamins, and other supplements, but the very ground we stand on is full of these happy electrons — completely free of charge too (pun intended)! If we don’t provide our bodies with the electrons it needs, then the free radical buildup can lead to a host of health problems. (source)
Over the last century, humans in general have lost connection to the Earth. We are no longer farming and spending the bulk of our time outside — we’re spending it in homes and office buildings made from all sorts of materials that block the positive connection to the earth.
We’re no longer walking to and from our destinations barefoot or in leather-sole footwear.
We’re driving in cars and when we do walk, our shoes are made from rubber, which also block the positive connection to the Earth.
While we can help combat free radicals by reducing our stress and eating a real food, nutrient-dense diet, there are also other ways we can help our bodies deal with these nasty little guys.
Connecting with the Earth is at the top of the list. When we stand barefoot on the Earth, our bodies absorb these electrons and help “turn the negatives we build up day-to-day into positives”. (source)
The very best way to make this happen is to take off our socks and shoes and run around barefoot in the grass, sand, or dirt. That, however, is not always possible, so that’s where Juil Shoes come in to play.
I was so excited when I discovered Juil a couple months ago. I have been making a conscious effort to get my feet in contact with the Earth more often, but it’s often hard for me because I don’t have much of a backyard and most of the parks around my neighborhood are sprayed with chemical fertilizers. I don’t really want to go walking around barefoot in that grass.
I grew up in the mountains and spent much of my childhood running around outdoors, and often I was barefoot. Even as a teen and young adult, when I was still living with my parents, I would walk around outside barefoot a lot. When I moved down to the city, I lost contact with that. I was surrounded with lots of concrete, asphalt, and chemical filled parks. There were very few options for me to go dig my toes into the Earth.
I was intrigued by Juil’s concept of going barefoot while wearing shoes. How is that possible? Well, with Juil’s shoes, it is!
Juil footwear cleanses your body of free radicals, based on a concept known as earthing or grounding. Whereas most footwear insulates your body from making a connection with the earth, the copper “dots” in Juil earthing shoes act as a conduit between your body and the Earth, allowing you to stay truly connected and balanced.
Their unique and one-of-a-kind footwear dates back to 2001, when the founders decided they would like to create a shoe that was as comfortable as going barefoot. They proceeded to do a lot of research and development and eventually, their products were born in 2011. Their exclusive Energy Flow Technology™ helps restore your body’s natural energy balance by channeling the energies inherent in the earth’s surface. The copper conductors in the shoes soles are what allow this to happen – they create a direct conduit between your foot and the energy of the Earth.
After learning more about their products from Peter, their director of media and advertising, he offered to send me a pair to test out. I was super excited and after spending far too long on their site, settled on the Mojanda style sandals. I couldn’t wait for them to arrive and they came fast (in only 2 days!). The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was the packaging. They have very attractive packaging and the sandals were wrapped in a reusable bag. It is perfect for a yoga bag and I immediately put it to use!
 When I put the sandals on the first time, they were a little hard on the feet. I am used to softer, squishy foam-soled shoes, so these felt more firm next to my feet. The leather straps were a little stiff, but it didn’t take long for them to start loosening up and conforming to my feet. I was advised to wear them for an hour or so at a time for the first little bit in order to give the leather time to soften and loosen up a bit. This is what I did for the first few days. Each time I wore them, they became more comfortable. I was surprised at how quickly my feet acclimated to these sandals. I was concerned that they would get tired or sore from the firmness of the shoe bed, but they didn’t. I ended up wearing these on an unexpected trip out of town and my feet never once got tired or sore.
When I was first learning about the brand and reading other reviews, I saw that some people said they were able to feel a sort of “charge” through the soles of their feet when wearing these sandals. I personally did not experience any reaction like that, but I know that every little bit that I can do to get my body more in touch with the Earth is benefiting my health. While I still try to go out and walk barefoot when I can, these sandals have become my go-to footwear.
I have had these sandals for a little over a month now and they still look brand new, despite my regular wear. They look great with both casual and slightly dressy clothing. I have worn them with jeans and skirts and they looked great with both. Due the quality craftsmanship and materials, I expect these sandals to last me for a long time. As I continue to wear them, I will make sure to note anything that I notice here in this post, though I do expect them to stand the test of time!
Oh, and Juil is not just for the ladies! They offer three styles of footwear for men as well, so the boys are certainly not left out! 🙂
