Naturally Knocked Up Book Review

No, no, I am not knocked up! So, before my friends and family start freaking out, rest assured. There is no bun in the oven. Not yet at least.

BUT, with the help of Donielle Baker’s new book, Naturally Knocked Up, I am hoping that one day there shall be! 😉

Why Read This Now?

I am a planner (if you know me at all, you’re nodding your head right about now).

I like to make plans. I know that they don’t always come to fruition, but if I don’t have some structure for my future, I feel like life is too chaotic.

I am currently on my healing journey to better health. I have Hashimoto’s disease and some adrenal issues, and I am working on fixing those problems. The ultimate goal for me is to create a healthy body, so that I can have a healthy pregnancy, birth, and baby.

When it comes to the subject of fertility, there is so much that I don’t know. So, when I got the chance to read Donielle’s new book, I was thrilled. This is a fantastic resource for me, as my husband and I start planning and preparing for a baby (in a few years. no right now!).

Here are my thoughts on this book:

First off, I really appreciated how the book was written. It was personal and easy to understand. The book flows nicely from chapter to chapter, with each one building upon information you read in previous sections. There is no complicated verbiage, no prior knowledge needed. It is perfect for any woman, at any stage in her journey.

Donielle starts off with an introduction on natural fertility, for those of us who may be new or uneducated on the subject (like me). From there, she flows into chapters on how to cleanse and restore health to the body with whole foods, as well as how to live more naturally so that our dwelling and surrounding environments are free from as many toxins as possible.

Chapter four moves us into exercises for fertility, where she discusses how to keep our body healthy and fit, which in turn keeps our reproductive systems healthy. She discusses the right and wrong ways to exercise, ultimately helping us achieve balance when it comes to fitness. Too much is bad and too little is also bad. Part of my healing journey is to lose the 70 pounds that I have packed on over the last 6-7 years and get back down to my healthy weight, before conception. I am half-way to my goal!

Chapter 5 discusses natural family planning and gives us the basics of the woman’s body and our cycles. The woman’s body really is amazing. Most of us, including me, are rather out of tune with what goes on throughout our full cycle, but you can know exactly what your body is doing, if you just start paying attention to certain things during the month. Not only does this help us plan for conception, it also alerts us to anything that might be wrong as well.

Chapters six through nine were all about food. My favorite subject 😉 Donielle discusses real foods, as well as super foods for fertility. She also goes through what not to eat if you are planning on conceiving. Good nutrition is the foundation of a healthy body, a healthy pregnancy, and a healthy baby. She goes on to discuss the “perfect” fertility diet. When it comes down to it, there is no “perfect” diet. Because each and every one of us is different, our bodies are different, and our dietary needs are different, it’s hard to put a label on it. She lists some of the most common eating styles and discusses a few pros and cons of each. It is up to us to figure out what works best for our body, but it is critical to build that eating style on a foundation of whole foods, healthy fats, and high-quality proteins.

Chapter ten discusses alternative therapies for infertility. There are many natural options when it comes to addressing infertility. Rather than immediately look to Western Medicine for help with infertility, take a look at some of the holistic methods that have been used for thousands of years. Have faith in natural healing. It might be just the thing you’ve been looking for.

Chapter eleven is an entire chapter devoted to stress. Because stress has such a negative impact on our bodies, it is important to our fertility and overall health that we manage it well. Our lives are always going to have stressors. There are always going to be things that “stress us out”. However, we can learn to manage that stress better. Donielle guides us through the ways stress affects us, as well as how we can maintain health, even when life throws us a curve ball.

In chapter twelve, Doneille helps us devise our own fertility plan. We’re all different. And, we’re all overwhelmed iwth information! Now, we just need to know how to put that information to practical use! With her help, we can wrap up the book feeling empowered and excited for the future. But, not before we check out some of the great recipes that she shares at the end of the book.

This book has been an incredible read for me. I feel so much more knowledgeable than I was before. I know it’s going to be a resource that I refer back to often. I am adding it to my library and I highly recommend it to any woman who wants children, is already planning for children, or who may be struggling with fertility. The information in this book will help each and everyone of you! Thank you, Donielle, for writing such a great resource! You can learn more about Donielle on her site, Naturally Knocked Up.
