I am a huge fan of vinegar in any variety of flavors and types. I use vinegar regularly on greens and salads, as well as in salad dressings. One of my favorite vinegars is apple cider vinegar. I love that it’s a raw product and contains the mother. When I saw that Tropical Traditions sold coconut water vinegar that was raw and naturally fermented, I just had to try it.

Coconut water is full of minerals and electrolytes and is a great addition to your beverage selection. It has been reported that coconut water was used as emergency IV fluid during World War II. I love to drink coconut water in a refreshing green drink or in water kefir. If you’re confused about all of the brands of coconut water out there, please check out my extensive coconut water review that I wrote.

Tropical Traditions Organic Raw Coconut Water VinegarRaw coconut water vinegar is created from leaving raw coconut water out in the open air and allowing it ferment. This fermentation process eventually leads to vinegar. As we know from products like kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and other fermented products, fermentation enhances the nutrients and digestibility of a food. Because of the acidic environment, undesirable bacteria will not grow. Tropical Traditions has perfected the fermentation process of their raw coconut water vinegar by working with professors at the University of the Philippines. They have developed a specific incubation system that produces clean coconut water vinegar from their certified organic coconuts. This process also allows them to retain the mother of vinegar, which contains the bacteria cultures. Those mothers are then used to ferment future batches of coconut water vinegar.

Tropical Traditions has always been careful to use high quality ingredients and their vinegar is no different. During the fermentation process, they only use certified organic Muscabado whole cane sugar. This sugar is grown by small scale famers in the Philippines and is fair trade certified. Sugar is needed during any fermentation process (as we know from brewing kombucha, water kefir, etc.) because it’s what feeds the bacteria. The sugar is then used up during the fermentation process. The deep brown color of the vinegar comes from the sugar.

This vinegar is truly unique. I had never heard of such a thing until I was surfing around on the Tropical Traditions website. It is the first of its kind to be sold on the U.S. market, and, they are the first company to make a truly raw and fermented product from the water of organic coconuts. This is one nutrient-packed vinegar.

When I first got the bottle of vinegar, it looks very close to apple cider vinegar. When I smelled it, it smelled like a cross between apple cider vinegar and white wine. The taste is a lot more tart and tangy than your apple cider vinegar – not as sweet. To me, it tastes more like white wine than vinegar. My favorite way to eat wilted greens is with a BIG splash of vinegar and this tasted fantastic. It’s also great in salad dressings too. All in all, I am very pleased. I’m excited to experiment with it more and create new recipes!

Now, it’s your chance to try this vinegar for yourself! I’m sure you already have ideas for how you’d use it too! And, if you need some ideas, they have a fantastic recipe section on their website.
