Recently, I had the pleasure of reviewing KerryAnn Foster’s new eBook. KerryAnn is the author of the wildly popular Cooking Traditional Foods website, as well as the founder of the Nourished Living Network, of which I am honored to be a member. She has done so much for the real and traditional foods movement, and she has been an inspiration to me, long before I ever actually met her. Her website is a huge resource for both newbies and old timers. I highly recommend checking her site out – lots of great information from recipes to how-to’s, to nutrition, and more. Needless to say, I was very happy to review her book, so let’s get to it!

When I downloaded my copy of Real Food Storage, I was shocked to see how long it was — shocked and very pleased! We’re talking over 150 pages of storage and prep tips, plus tons of recipes.

One thing I noticed right away was how neatly organized this book is. You can easily find the topic you’re looking for and flip right to it. When it comes to books like this, I typically don’t sit down and read it from cover to cover. I will find the topics I’m most interested in and read those first and then move on to other sections. The first thing I flipped to was the “Per Person Storage Needs” section (page 11). I am notorious for either having too much food or not enough food, so I was really interested in the measurements she recommended for calculating food storage and consumption.

To give you an idea of the items KerryAnn covers on her book, she has specific sections on storage and prep for:

  • Grains
  • Legumes
  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Sweeteners
  • Fats
  • Salts
  • Fruits and veggies
  • And more!

So, once I had read about how I should store these foods, now I want to know how to eat these foods. 🙂 Bring on the recipes! I already knew KerryAnn’s recipes from her Cooking Traditional Foods website, so I know she’s a great cook. I am just excited to have more of her work as an addition to my cookbook shelf!

A little note here – while KerryAnn has a thorough and in-depth explanation of food storage, that doesn’t even account for half of the book. She has almost 100 pages of recipes in there, not just a few sprinkled in here and there. So, essentially, you’re getting a whole new cookbook when you buy this book. That is awesome!

Her recipe categories include:

  • Sourdough
  • Quick Breads
  • Side Dishes
  • Meatless Main Dishes
  • Beef and Chicken Dishes
  • Desserts
  • And more!

Over the next few weeks, I look forward to exploring more of her recipes. The ones that are on the top of my list right now are her GF Cinnamon Rolls/Stickey Buns, Soaked and Veggied Blender Waffles (we all need more help getting veggies in our diet), Falafel, Chickpea Curry, Lemon Chicken Soup, and Chicken Piccata (one of my all time favorite dishes).

All in all, I would highly recommend this book. You can learn how to properly stockpile and store food in case a rainy day hits. KerryAnn discusses how she fed her family for 11 months during a stint of unemployment, all without resorting to food stamps or cheap, initiation, processed food. It might seem a little intimidating at first, but KerryAnn writes it in a very easy-to-understand manner and shows you just what is possible. And, her price of $19.99 seems like steal for the amount of information you get from it. To order the book, just visit the Real Food Storage Tips and Recipes page on her site.
