When following a paleo or dairy-free diet, coconut milk can be a staple. But store-bought brands can be pricey and more often than not contain unnecessary ingredients. Rather than just suck it up and fork out the dough, you can make coconut milk yourself!

Jessica has already gone into all the details you’ll need to know exactly why you should make your own coconut milk, so let’s just get to what you need to have on hand to make it (and how). All it takes is two ingredients, a strainer, and a blender and you’re good to go!

Wanna take a wild guess at those two ingredients?

Shredded coconut and filtered water.

That’s it, folks!

Now, there are a few different ways that you can make homemade coconut milk, depending on how concentrated you want it. Jessica uses a ratio of 1:1 coconut to water. I usually use a ratio of 1:4, since I pretty much just use my coconut milk for smoothies and baking, but for this post, I compromised and used a 1:2 ratio. 😉

You can also soak your coconut in hot water before pulverizing it, or just stick it straight in the blender and go for it. I’ve found that pre-soaking the coconut in hot water results in a creamier finished product.

Easy Homemade Coconut MilkWhether you soak your coconut or not, making your own coconut milk is still very easy. Just place the coconut and water into a high-powered blender (both Jessica and I love using our Blendtec for this!) and blend away for a few minutes. Then strain your coconut milk through a wire mesh strainer or cheesecloth, and keep your fresh milk in the fridge if you don’t use it right away.

Make sure you don’t throw out that coconut meal you just strained out of your milk! It can easily be dried in a dehydrator or oven and ground into homemade coconut flour! Or, you can use it another time or two to make more coconut milk (though the milk will be weaker).
