If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, having a good set of knives is essential. I actually do not have a great set of knives and it makes me miss working in a professional kitchen, where we had our knives sent out and sharpened every week! If you’re looking for a set of new knives, then here is a handy chart to help you narrow down the types of knives you need. One of these days, I’ll have the money to invest in a really awesome set of knives!

  1. This is a great chart! We do not have a great set of knives, but it’s a thing I’d eventually like to get. Until then we just keep making sure ours are sharpened so they’ll function as needed. I’m not sure where in Denver you can get your knives sharpened regularly, but if you don’t mind a little drive north, I know of a couple of places that do knife sharpening.

First off, the first Saturday of each month Whole Foods Belmar (in Lakewood) has the Rolling Stone truck there til noon. I think it’s $3 a knife for any size.

Also, the Boulder Farmer’s Market has a guy who sharpens knives – he’s there every weekend. Not sure of the cost, because we haven’t availed ourselves of his services… yet. 🙂

I usually go every three months to get them sharpened. As a matter of fact, it’s coming up on time to get them done, soon.

    • Ooooh! Thanks for the tips Laura! The Belmar WF would be closest to me. I will have to check that out. $3 a knife is a steal and mine are in desperate need of sharpening! I really, really want a NICE set of knives, but there’s never room in the budget for a purchase like that!

      • You’re very welcome! I hear ya on the wanting a really good set of knives, but never having room in the budget! That’s where we’re at now. A couple of my knives are *blush* Target knives. The best I can do is keep them professionally sharpened until such a point as I can save up the money necessary to get the knives I want.
