Do you have dreams of homesteading? Do you feel like you’ll never attain those dreams? Did you know that there are different definitions of homesteading, and there’s a very good chance that you’re already doing it?

If you are like me, you dream of a life where you can return to your roots or live a “simpler” life. Our definitions of the “perfect” homestead are all different, but the fundamental desire is often the same. For some, the dream of a homestead means having a huge garden and growing most, if not all, of your own food. For others, it might mean having a cow or two, goats, and/or chickens. Perhaps it’s even a dream to live completely off the grid and become self-sufficient.

No matter what your perfect homestead looks like in your mind, this is the book for you. My friend Jill, author of the popular site The Prairie Homestead, has written the perfect resource guide for those who are dreaming of homesteading. She explores the different definitions of homesteading and shows that you don’t have to live on a 100 acre farm with chickens and cows to be considered a homesteader. No matter what small (or big) part of the world we call home, we can homestead exactly where we are.

The most eye opening thing that I learned from Jill’s book, Your Custom Homestead, is that I can call myself a homesteader, even though I live smack dab in the middle of a big city, in a townhome with neighbors on both sides, and a north-facing yard that is only 10’x16′. This might sound so simple, but just this one thing really opened my eyes. Jill opens up the definition of homesteading.

“Modern homesteading doe not have to be an ‘all or nothing’ lifestyle … You can homestead anywhere, regardless of what you may or may not have. Wherever you live right now — a high-rise, a mobile home, the end of a cul-de-sac, or on ten acres — that is your homestead. No more putting off your dreams while you wait for the ‘perfect’ situation. Take what you have right now and run with it.” ~Jill Winger, Your Custom Homestead

Such inspiring advice, especially for someone who has a bad habit of “waiting for the perfect time”, “the perfect place”, “the perfect amount of money”, etc. If you don’t believe me, ask dear hubby. He has put up with it for almost 8 years! 🙂 She has given me hope that even though my situation might not be “perfect”, I can still be following my dreams, even if they need to be adjusted slightly. And that’s OK.

In the first part of the book, Jill breaks through the outdated definition of homesteading and prompts us to ask some questions of ourselves and our dreams. She shows us how some creative thinking can yield results that we could have never imagined. I am homesteading when I plant seeds in my teeny garden and grow my own food. I am homesteading when I freeze and can food for the off season. I am homesteading when I air dry my clothes, rather than using they dryer.

In the second part of the book, Jill leads us down the path of organization and planning. She gives us a 21-day road map to becoming a homesteader, no matter where we are in life. Each day is broken into three parts — an introduction to the step we need to take, home(stead) work, and a peek into her life. It’s nice to have someone give us the instructions to make plans, but it’s fantastic to be invited into the real life experiences of that person. I personally find that I learn more from real life examples than plain instructions. Pretty sure I’m not alone.

I walked away from this book with a better understanding of myself and my dreams. Now, I can take the information I found through this self-discovery and together with my husband, we can mesh our dreams and start working towards a situation that will allow both of us to live the kind of life we want and that will make us happy.

“If you yearn for country living but are stuck in the middle of the city (and not getting out anytime soon), then make the concepts of a rural lifestyle come to you. Create a customized version of homesteading that works in your unique situation. This is what I refer to as practicing contentment through creativity.” ~Jill Winger, Your Custom Homestead
