Since I am trying to reduce my chemical exposure this year, I decided to look at my dishwasher detergent. Last month, if you remember, I tested and reviewed Tropical Traditions non-toxic laundry detergent and oxygen bleach. Once you start looking at all of the nasty ingredients in detergents, it’s not hard to see why we should eliminate them from our house.

First of all, detergents like laundry soap and dishwasher soap are very hard on the environment. While some of the toxic ingredients can be broken down in our water treatment plants, others cannot and are often discharged out into nearby waterways. This threatens the ecosystem in, and around, that area.

Second, several of the ingredients in dishwasher detergent are also quite toxic to our bodies. They are poisons if ingested and they also contribute to indoor air pollution. Phosphates and chlorine are two of the most common ingredients that we should be concerned with. If ingested, phosphates can cause severe problems for our organs, respiratory systems, and if they touch our skin, they can leave burns. Chlorine can cause also skin irritation and burns, in addition to irritating the nose, eyes, and airways. If ingested, it can be fatal.

But, do the natural and non-toxic products work? This is something that I always wonder. I hate being tied to chemicals, but I’m always skeptical that the chemical-free varieties will actually get the job done, especially when it comes to dishes. Well, folks, I’m here to tell you that Tropical Traditions’ non-toxic dishwasher detergent not only works, it works better than any of the commercial versions I have used.

Tropical Traditions’ Non-Toxic Dishwasher Detergent

Tropical Traditions’ powdered dishwasher detergent is non-toxic and environmentally safe. There are no harmful by-products that have to be treated or broken down in our local water treatment plants. TT’s product does not contain any of the toxic ingredients found in other brands, like chlorine, phosphates, fillers, or fragrances. And, it washes completely clean, leaving absolutely no residue on your dishes. The ingredients in this product are quite similar to their powdered laundry detergent and they pack a powerful, eco-friendly punch.

You use TT’s dishwasher detergent just like you would any other dishwasher detergent. The powder is very concentrated, so after some experimenting, you might find that you use less than half of what you did with your normal, commercial detergent (I did). It’s safe for both hard and soft waters and dissolves cleanly and completely, leaving no film on your dishes or the inside of your dishwasher.

In addition, you also won’t need to use a separate rinse aid (which can also be toxic and expensive) in your dishwasher when using TT’s detergent. It’s not needed and one load will show you that there are no spots are left on your dishes. Please note that it is not safe for real silver.

Their standard directions read: (1 Scoop = 2 oz.) Fill one dishwasher cup for regular loads. Fill both cups for tougher problems. Load according to dishwasher manufacturer’s directions. It is recommended to wash silver articles by hand. Make sure all items are dish-washer safe. For really tough jobs, like baked-on food, soak item for 30 minutes or more in sink full of hot water and 1 scoop of Household Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent. Safe for septic tanks. Store in cool dry place.

The product ingredients are:

  • Sodium citrate
  • Sodium carbonate
  • Sodium percarbonate
  • Surfactants
  • Rinse agents
  • Silicate

After testing out this product, I will never go back to commercial dishwasher detergent. I am hooked and will continue using this product. Are you ready to give it a try?
