As you well know, I love yoga and have found my passion for it this year. It has become an integral part of my life and I am thankful to have bonded with the practice the way I have. I am starting to see the results of dedicated practice and it is not something that will come and go. Regular yoga practice is here to stay! You can also read about why I love yoga and the health benefits of yoga.
One thing I don’t love about yoga is how dirty my mat gets and how often I forget to clean it! (ewwwww!) If you think about it, yoga mats are nasty little places. Not only do you have all the dirt and germs from the floor of your living room or studio, but you also have the dirt and germs from your feet, and then if you’re doing hot yoga classes (or just happen to sweat like me) then you have that added icky-ness too! I was washing my yoga mat in the bathtub with a couple drops of gentle soap and warm and letting it soak for a few minutes. But, that only works when I have time AND when I remember to do it! So, I went to the store to buy some mat cleaner – $12.95 for a little bottle? Are you kidding me? I can make my own! And make my own, I did. It works great and smells great! Plus, since it’s in a spray bottle in my living room, I am more apt to clean my mat often!
Homemade Yoga Mat Cleaner Recipe
1/2 cup witch hazel
1/2 cup distilled water
40 drops tea tree oil
Essential oil of your choice (optional)
Add all the ingredients to a clean spray bottle and shake gently to combine. To use, just lay your mat out or hang it up and spray liberally all over the surface. Let it sit for a couple minutes and then wipe off with a wet towel. Let your mat air dry and you’re good to go!

Great idea. You wouldn’t happen to have a formulary for leather cleaning, would you? It’s also very expensive!
I don’t, but if I come across one, I’ll let you know!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. If you make the recipe, let me know what you think!
I am about to also make my own yoga mat cleaner and was wondering; is it really necessary for the water to be distilled?
Love and light in your yoga practice… x
I was told to use distilled by someone at one of my classes, because it would not leave any sort of mineral residue on your mat. I honestly don’t know if it is something that you need to be concerned about though. If you can use filtered, where there is no chlorine, that would probably better than tap water. Happy yoga-ing!
